LILA: A Journey into the Gnawa Tradition of Morocco

Gnawa music is a rich tradition that is found mainly in Morocco, with its roots tracing down to sub-saharan Africa.

Its complex rhythms and devotional chants create a dynamic sound, and its effect on listeners is hypnotizing and satisfying.

We traveled to several cities across various regions in Morocco in 2019 and interviewed some renowned musicians and enthusiasts.

From learning about the tradition's historical roots, to the healing ceremonies in which the music was traditionally offered, to the worldwide stage that Gnawa music now finds itself in, we were deeply amazed at what lies beneath the veil of Gnawa music.
